Role Summary

LEA is hiring a Traffic Engineer with experience in highway design to join the Highways and Structures Practice Area, located in the Markham office. Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, this position will be responsible for working on numerous projects for the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), and respected municipal clients. Likely projects/tasks may include: Traffic Impact Studies, Highway/Freeway Capacity Analysis; Queue/Delay Analysis, Collision Analysis, Signalized and Unsignalized Intersection Studies, Local Traffic Network Analysis, Parking Studies, Active Transportation Plans, Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Strategies, Construction Staging Concept Development, Traffic Management Plan, Traffic Performance Review, Pavement Marking and Signing, Roadside Safety Analysis, etc. The candidate should be familiar with related highway design generally involved in a Highway project.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare design concepts related to active transportation projects, traffic impact studies, parking and traffic calming studies, and traffic management plans.
  • Produce preliminary design engineering drawings, including plan, site layouts, typical sections, and preliminary material quantity take-offs.
  • Review drawings and perform quality control checks on drawings and reports.
  • Contribute towards the submission of effective proposals to support the team and undertake business development activities.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other documentation, including cost estimates.
  • Integrate transportation planning and engineering to solve complex issues; working closely with traffic, utilities, natural, heritage, urban design and other disciplines to develop solutions.
  • Prepare design concepts related to active transportation projects, traffic impact studies, parking and traffic calming studies, and traffic management plans.
  • Prepare design reviews, construction and traffic management plans, and pavement marking and traffic control plans for land development projects to ensure on-site functionality and compliance with relevant regional/municipal design requirements.
  • Coordinate and communicate project information with other disciplines and counterparts on the clients' side.
  • Participate in project meetings with clients, public stakeholders, and other project team members.
  • Contribute to various transportation-related proposals, technical reports/presentations, and briefing memorandums.
  • Able to supervise and mentor junior design staff with various design-related tasks.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends.
  • Perform other exciting tasks and duties within the scope of the practice area.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent degree with 5-7 years of progressive Transportation/Traffic/Highway’s experience.
  • Capable of operating the Traffic Engineering software, e.g., Vissim, Synchro, Aimsun, SimTraffic, EMME, TORUS, etc. and has a working knowledge of AutoCAD, and AutoTURN. Knowledge of Civil 3D and/or InRoads will be considered as an asset.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a few or more of the industry-relevant software (AutoCAD, AutoTURN, Civil3D, MicroStation, InRoads, Vissim, Synchro, Aimsun, SimTraffic, EMME, TORUS).
  • Familiarity with Traffic Engineering-related SP, NSPs, etc. design specifications for projects entering the construction phase.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Applicable knowledge of transportation engineering principles and jurisdictional design guidelines (e.g. TAC, MTO, OPSS, OPSD, AODA), as well as provincial and municipality design standards.
  • Strategic and process-oriented, prefers to operate in a fast and dynamic environment.
  • Team player and able to work independently with little oversight.
  • Able to prioritize tasks with excellent organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented and commendable problem-solving skills.
