Your co-op work term at LEA
You will work with a team of Transportation Professionals to complete various traffic and multi-modal surveys throughout York Region and the GTA. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are interested in Transportation learning opportunities. Training and tools will be provided. Hours per week is 37.5, however it will vary by day as some days you are required to go out for site work. Please read the rest of this document for more details about LEA, duties, compensation, and work arrangements. Also, this Co-op work term will allow you greater networking opportunities and exposure to different areas of Transportation Planning and Engineering. The work term is expected to start by May 8, 2023, and end by August 25, 2023.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Participation in a variety of Transportation data collection projects, to collect, compile, analyze and review traffic and transit survey data.
  • Communicate with senior Transportation Professionals to schedule on-site surveys. Types of the surveys may include one or more of the following:
    • Turning movement counts (vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist volumes travelling at an intersection)
    • MX geofence bus route audit (operating the MX vehicle laser height measuring tool to audit DDV bus routes across GTA)
    • Cordon count (count the number of vehicles and people travelling across a designated line/street segment)
    • Site trip generation (monitor all types of travelling modes going in and out of land use)
    • Parking lot utilization (record parking space demand at a specific site, or on-street)
    • Loading (determine vehicle time, location and duration of use, as well as vehicle type)
    • Gap acceptance (determine the number of opportunities for a vehicle to pass into or out of an access point)
    • Vehicle queue length (determine the length of vehicle stacking at an intersection, by lanes)
    • Delay (time required for a vehicle to complete a maneuver)
    • Travel time (time required to travel a set route)
    • Traffic signal warrant (collect 8-hour volume to assess the feasibility of adding a traffic signal)
    • Intercept/interview survey (obtain public feedback on a transportation issue(s) around their neighbourhood)
    • Trace study (determine the intended usage of a particular site)
    • Speed study (obtain vehicle speed at a selected road segment)
    • License plate (determine which geographic location the users are from at the site)
  • Other duties are assigned to you within the scope of the Transportation Practice Area.

The qualifications you need:

  • Undergraduate college degree in Transportation/Civil or a relevant field.
  • Very good communication and analytical skills.
  • Have access to a vehicle, Full G licence, for transportation and safety.
  • Capable of articulating/writing accurate notes.
  • Detail-orientated and have a discerning eye for spotting traffic movement patterns.
  • Willing to travel to different locations across Southern Ontario.

Compensation:

  1. Hourly Rate: You will be paid $22.00 per hour which includes 4% vacation pay.
  2. Overtime working hours above and beyond 37.5 hrs/week are paid at the above hourly rate.

Work Arrangement

  • Typical surveys periods are typically performed at the following times:
    • TMC Surveys: Weekday AM (6:30-9:30 am), Weekday Midday (11 am-2 pm), Weekday PM (3:30-6:30 pm) and Weekend Peaks (10 am-3 pm).
    • Parking Studies: 4:00 pm to midnight, Midnight to 3:00 am.
    • MX DDV audit: 8:00 am to 6-7:00 pm
  • Weather permitting, outdoor surveys and periodic patrol of the site are expected.
