International Women in Engineering Day 2020

Today is International Women in Engineering Day, an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the exciting career opportunities available to women in this industry. The theme of INWED 2020 is #ShapeTheWorld and is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that women make in their communities through their engineering work.

In celebration, some of LEA’s engineers and planners have offered some insight on what it means to be a woman in engineering and advice for young girls looking to start a career in engineering.

“My advice to young women in engineering would be to never back down. We live in a world that is pretty male dominated - especially in the STEM world. However, we also live in a world that is full of highly intelligent and bright women. Don’t be afraid to set yourself up for success.”

“It can be intimidating when you are starting your career and you don’t feel like you fit the mould of what an engineer should look like. However, it is important to find a support network and have confidence in your abilities. Don’t be afraid to take your seat at the table, because you got yourself there.”
