On December 17th 2017 the ribbon was officially cut on the highly anticipated Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE). The six new stations extend the Yonge-University Line 8.6 km north past Sheppard West station (formerly known as Downsview Station). LEA Consulting, as a member of The Spadina Group Associates (TSGA), left our engineering mark on two of the new subway stations: Finch West, and Pioneer Village.
Finch West is located under Keele Street, north of Finch Avenue West. Along with commuter parking spaces for 350 vehicles, the station boasts a 6-bay bus terminal and 100 secure and 13 short term bicycle parking spots. On top of it all, the station sports a cool roof over the main entrance, and a green roof over the elevated power substation. All these features combine in a station that is aligned with Toronto Green Standards and the Green Roof Bylaw.
Continuing north on Line 1 is Pioneer Village Station. The station runs diagonally under the intersection of Steeles Avenue West and is intended to provide access for existing and future developments. Above ground the station offers commuter parking spaces for 1,900 vehicles, as well as short term bicycle parking spaces. A pedestrian walkway runs between the station and a new 6-bay YRT bus terminal that connects Line 1 with VIVA and YRT routes. South of Steeles Avenue West, the station connects with a 12-bay TTC bus terminal. Pioneer Village Station also incorporates many environmental initiatives including: cool roofs and green roofs, LED lighting, Water efficient plumbing, Energy efficient HVAC, and Reduced storm water runoff through green roof landscaping and soft landscaping areas.
These two stations, along with the four other new stations, establish important transit connections to York University and Vaughan. LEA is proud to have worked with our many talented partners on this historic subway extension project. For more information, head over to the projects page
